MAG is pleased to announce the signing of a new grant agreement with the United States government to implement the project “Cluster Munition and Other Conventional Weapons Clearance in Central Vietnam.”
Over the next 10 months, this $6.6 million grant will enable MAG to:
- Clear more than 21.7 million square metres of land contaminated with cluster munitions and other unexploded bombs;
- Respond to all emergency spot tasks assigned by the authorities to remove immediate threats posed by unexploded bombs;
- Deliver 142 Explosive Ordnance Risk Education sessions to the most at-risk communities, conduct impact assessments in all completed clearance sites, and strengthen a network of community focal points to sustain safety messages.
Altogether, these activities will directly benefit at least 23,175 people living in areas affected by explosive remnants of war in Quang Tri province.
Sarah Goring, MAG's Country Director for Vietnam, said: “We are immensely grateful to the United States government for their continued trust in our work. We know this project will significantly increase safety and economic development for families across central Vietnam, turning land littered with bombs into a source of income and a stable livelihood. MAG has worked in Vietnam for some 25 years and we remain determined in our mission to see communities here thrive and live free from fear.”
This project also aligns with MAG’s wider efforts to support communities recovering from war around the world, help prevent new conflicts, and contribute meaningfully to a safer, more secure, and peaceful global environment.
