Country Director Ukraine
Permanent position

About the Ukraine programme:
Since the Russian invasion of 24th February 2022, Ukraine has been subjected to heavy artillery bombardment, missile, and air strikes, as well as the use of landmines and cluster munitions. The scale of the conflict and the use of high impact and indiscriminate weapons requires an urgent and extensive response. MAG responded to the crisis in 2022 and now employs nearly 440 staff in our Ukraine programme, in a range of operational and support/administrative activities, with further scale-up planned during 2026. The programme has a representation office in Kyiv, and operational offices in Mykolaiv (also covering accessible areas of Kherson) and Kharkiv.
About the role:
MAG is seeking an experienced and strategic Country Director to lead and represent our Ukraine programme. This is a senior leadership role responsible for providing strategic direction, ensuring the effective delivery and oversight of programme activities, and representing MAG with donors, authorities, partners, and key stakeholders.
You will lead the country Senior Management Team and be accountable for the overall performance, compliance, financial management, and impact of MAG’s operations in Ukraine. You will play a central role in business development, donor engagement, and partnership building, while ensuring that all activities are delivered in line with MAG’s standards, values, and global strategy.
This role requires strong leadership in complex and high-risk environments, with responsibility for overseeing security, operational risk, and programme continuity. You will also provide visible leadership to a large and diverse workforce, fostering a positive, inclusive culture aligned with MAG’s values and safeguarding commitments.
About you:
You will bring substantial senior management experience in an international context, with a proven track record of leading large-scale programmes in complex or high-risk environments. You will have strong experience in strategic leadership, financial and operational oversight, and managing multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.
You are confident building relationships with donors, government stakeholders, partners, and consortia, with demonstrated experience in business development, programme design, and contract management. Strong communication, representation, and negotiation skills are essential, along with the ability to make sound decisions, manage risk, and lead effectively under pressure.
You will be committed to MAG’s mission and values and motivated to lead a high impact programme in a dynamic and challenging context. Experience in humanitarian programming, knowledge of institutional donors, and experience working in Eastern Europe or similar contexts would be an advantage.
