A Statement from MAG's Chief Executive, Darren Cormack, on announcements made by the UK Government on International Development reforms

“We welcome the UK Government’s commitment today to supporting communities affected by conflict. That support is needed now more than ever, as levels of conflict continue to rise. The signalled support for Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza and Lebanon – countries where MAG is working or preparing to work – is particularly welcomed.

“The Government’s explicit recognition today of its long-standing partnership with MAG reflects the life-saving work our teams carry out worldwide and highlights the UK’s leadership in the effort to rid the world of landmines and address both the immediate and long-term consequences of war.

“In Lebanon, for instance, our colleagues were forced to evacuate amid devastating aerial bombardments, yet they are already planning an emergency response that will save the lives of communities caught in the current crisis. In Angola, MAG teams continue to clear landmines left behind by a conflict that ended almost 25 years ago. And in Ukraine, our brave deminers are working to make land safe again after four years of exhausting war.

“The Government’s focus on fragile and conflict-affected states is an important recognition of the profound and reverberating impact that conflict has on communities - and of the vital role organisations such as MAG and the HALO Trust play in addressing those consequences.

"As the UK shifts towards more innovative, capability‑focused development approaches, the role of organisations like MAG remains essential. Ensuring communities can live, work and learn free from the threat of landmines and explosive ordnance is a fundamental building block of stability, resilience and sustainable development.”
