Country Director, Myanmar

The starting salary package for this position is £57,524 GBP / approx. $75,773 USD including all allowances. Allowances will be dependent on base location.

We envisage that this role will be based in Yangon, Myanmar with occasional national and regional travel. However, if the context does not allow this, the base location of the role may be revised to Cambodia.

About the role

MAG is looking for a Country Director to provide strategic leadership and representation for MAG in Myanmar. Reporting to the Regional Director, you will be responsible for the effective integration of strategic, programmatic and operational management, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations and MAG’s mission and mandate. You will have a wide variety of strategic responsibilities including contract management, donor liaison, people management, security management, capacity building and risk management. This senior role will provide you with the opportunity to use your people management skills, and will require a solid understanding of country dynamics given the remote locations some of the team work in . You will also have the opportunity to use your skills in stakeholder management, to take a leading role in donor development, and working with a range of national and international actors.

About you

To lead the work on the ground, MAG will be looking for candidates with extensive experience working internationally at a senior management level in large-scale humanitarian or development programmes. You should have high level planning, organisational and diplomatic skills to negotiate with various political and military stakeholders as well as the ability to network with potential donors to further develop and extend MAG’s programme of work. You will also need excellent people management skills and the ability to manage support functions including HR, administration, logistics and finance. The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of working in complex political and volatile security contexts and the tact, diplomacy and tenacity needed to lead this programme. Previous experience in the mine action sector is highly desirable, however we welcome applications from experienced managers from any development sector. Given the complexity, experience of the Myanmar context is also desirable although not essential – the successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to quickly grasp the complex dynamics of the country.

About the Myanmar programme

Following decades of armed conflict, Myanmar has one of the highest levels of landmine contamination in the world. MAG has worked in Myanmar since 2013, but since the coup in February 2021, there has been an increase in violent conflict which has increased the vulnerabilities to conflict and explosive ordnance (EO). As there is no national agreement allowing the clearance of landmines, Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) remains the best way of reducing the casualty rates from mines and other explosive ordnance at present.
