MAG has worked in Republic of Congo (RoC) since 2007 destroying small arms and light weapons (SALW), unexploded ordnance (UXO) and landmines. Conflict in RoC has resulted in the displacement of approximately 810,000 people, and the death of nearly 15,000 people. In 2005, an estimated 34,000 weapons were believed to be in the Republic of Congo, many abandoned or stored in unsafe conditions. Unrestricted access to this weaponry and ammunition has resulted in an unsecure environment and provides a means for militia groups to rearm in the event of future conflicts. MAG deploys highly-trained national staff to ensure responsive and safe destruction of mines/UXO and SALW throughout the country.
MAG’s activities include:
- Survey teams identify and assess the threat from areas contaminated by unexploded ordnance (UXO) and enable the development of clearance plans to mitigate this threat
- Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) teams destroy dangerous items such as assault rifles, explosive ordnance, anti-personnel and anti-tank mines and ammunition
- Teams locate and destroy Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS)
Through these activities MAG has been able to reduce access to unsecured and dangerous weaponry and remove the threat from UXO/mines. This provides a more secure environment for communities, enabling citizens to improve their livelihoods and develop their economic potential. In addition to developing national personnel, MAG has also been able to strengthen sustainable national capabilities by providing technical support and training to the national army.
