MAG started a quality management project in Cyprus in 2004, in support of the United Nations mine clearance program. An estimated 99 million square meters are contaminated by landmines as a result of the conflict between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, which divided the island into two population zones.
Based in the capital of Nicosia, MAG's work in Cyprus includes the following activities:
- Support the UN in the delivery of its mine clearance program
- Audit and measure clearance activities against international and national standards to ensure the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of operations
- Continually review and improve clearance practices
MAG's quality control and management program ensures that the UN is able to release safe land to the local communities. This clearance provides safe access to roads and trade routes, enabling social and economic development for the people of Cyprus.
