Chad

MAG works in Chad clearing landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and abandoned ordnance (AO) to provide safe access to roadways, natural resources, and living areas for displaced Chadian populations and refugees from west Darfur. Years of conflict have resulted in widespread contamination and MAG works primarily in the eastern and southern parts of the country clearing UXO and AO. This reduces the risk of accident and allows communities to develop their livelihoods and economy. The Chadian National Demining Centre (CND) seconds technical national staff to MAG to enable the delivery of its mine/UXO clearance projects.

MAG's Chad program targets the most at-risk communities through the following activities:

  • Prioritized areas are identified through the use of survey and information analysis.
  • EOD teams are deployed and through a combination of technical survey and clearance, are able to locate, remove, and destroy landmines, UXO, and AO.
  • Mine Risk Education (MRE) Teams provide information that enables affected people to avoid dangerous items.

Through this approach MAG reaches many at-risk communities in Chad, enabling the country to recover from conflict. MAG’s works closely with the CND and also seconds technical teams from them. This enables MAG to effectively deliver its clearance projects whilst fulfilling MAG’s policy of sustainable national capacity building. MAG also collaborates with development NGO’s and the UN.
