MAG is helping local non-governmental demining organizations in  Afghanistan to use good standard operating procedures, have well-organized institutional structures and build on their own capacity to expand.

MAG first began operations in Afghanistan in 1989 as a response to the heavy contamination resulting from years of conflict between Soviet and Afghan forces.  In October of 2009, MAG resumed work in Afghanistan, and currently assists with capacity-building alongside NGOs, national organizations, and charities working to clear Afghanistan of its landmines.

MAG's International Director for Technical Development and Evaluation, Steve Priestley, stated, "The technical staff in these charities have been clearing landmines for years, so they do know the risks, and how to get the job done.  But what they perhaps don't have much experience with are the important practicalities of using good standard operating procedures, having a well organized institutional structure, and building on their own capacity to expand.  MAG can help them achieve this."
