Marathon des Sables

    April 2011

One guaranteed place available

The Toughest Footrace on Earth!

MAG is delighted to announce that we have entrants in the 2011 Marathon des Sables (Marathon of the Sands).

MAG has one guaranteed place available due to a participant dropping out. If you are interested, please call 0161 238 5446. The place is available only to UK residents.

MAG will need a £500 deposit from you and you will need to pay the tour operator the remainder of the cost - £2,700. Of this, £1,500 is due immediately and the last £1,000 will be due before Christmas.

Run for free... MAG will refund up to one third of what you raise to cover your costs. Raise enough sponsorship and your participation in this incredible event could be free!

About the MdS

The event covers 243km/151 miles (in sections similar to 25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km) run over six days (seven for some) - equivalent to five-and-a-half regular marathons. That's a speed of between three and 14km an hour for competitors aged between 16 and 78.

In addition to that, competitors have to carry everything they will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on their backs in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit, sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.

Runners experience mid-day temperatures of up to 120°F, and running or walking on uneven rocky, stony ground as well as 15-20 per cent of the distance being in sand dunes.

The heat, distance and rubbing can trash feet and may cause severe trauma if incorrect shoes and equipment are used. Mental stamina probably constitutes at least 50 per cent of whether entrants complete the distance or not. Physical fitness is important but don't underestimate the mental stress that must be endured. Even if you have run dozens of 26 mile marathons, this does not mean that you will automatically find the MdS easy.

On the fourth day, runners set off across the barren wilderness to complete a 45-50 mile stage. Few people complete this before dark that evening and some will not come in until after dark the next night. This is followed by the 26 mile marathon stage!

Call 0161 238 5446 now if you are interested in the most amazing challenge on Earth!
