Jacques Delemarle, MAG's Technical Operations Manager in Burundi, explains the demolition process, as well as the destruction of SALW in general, to guests at the ceremony. |
The Day was used as a promotion of the Civilian Disarmament Campaign going on in Burundi.
Speeches, songs, plays and the famous Burundian drums reminded of the dangers posed by weapons and grenades – and the importance of surrendering them to the National Commission of Civilian Disarmament.
The ceremony, attended by among others the UN Secretary General Representative (Mr. Mahmoud), the Burundian Minister of Public Security and Minister for Human Rights, and Ambassadors, was concluded by the in situ demolition by MAG of two grenades which had been handed over by the population.
MAG is supporting the Civilian Disarmament Campaign by destroying the Small Arms and Light Weapons which the population surrenders.
