MAG needed to transport a mine detonation roller 1,000 kilometres across the width of the country, from the capital Luanda to its operational base in Luena, Moxico Province.
The sheer weight of the vehicle meant it was too heavy to be taken by a MAG lorry.
Offshore drilling company Pride – which sponsored the Luanda International School-MAG Golf Day in June and whose staff received a presentation from MAG in August – made a donation of US$8,000 to cover the costs renting a specialised truck for the four-day journey.
The mine detonation roller will be used in conjunction with the bulldozer MAG already has in Luena. It will be used for ground preparation in the minefields, increasing the productivity of the manual clearance teams.
It will also be used for road clearance. Due to the characteristics of the roads in Moxico, which are contaminated with minimum metal anti-vehicle mines – which are difficult to detect using metal detectors – the use of the mine roller detonation roller will allow a safe and quick clearance of those roads.
