The problem
Due to a series of armed conflicts that divided the Democratic Republic of Congo between 1996 and 2003, large parts of the country have suffered from fighting between government forces, different rebel factions and external militaries.
An estimated 3.3 million people are believed to have died as a result, and 2.3 million were displaced. All along the former frontline, remnants of conflict constitute a serious threat to the resident population, returnees and humanitarian organisations, as well as the ongoing peace process in the country.
How MAG is helping
MAG works to reduce the threat posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance in the country – clearing dangerous areas and using Mine Risk Education in order to create safe access to water sources, agricultural land, medical facilities and education centres – and to destroy stockpiles of Small Arms and Light Weapons and ammunition.

Your donation to MAG helps us to move into current and former conflict zones to clear the remnants of conflict, enabling recovery and assisting the development of affected populations.
Beneficiaries
Working in areas close to the former frontline and with the relevant partner agencies, such as UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency), MAG focuses on bringing assistance to those most in need, creating safe access to agricultural land, water sources, medical care and education facilities – particularly in areas of high population return, or where humanitarian non-governmental organisations need to safely carry out their assistance activities.
