BURUNDI: Bomb cleared in Bujumbura

On October 2nd MAG responded to a request for assistance from the police station in Robero district, Bujumbura, because an aircraft bomb had been found nearby.

When MAG's Mobile Team arrived they found that the fuse was still in place, and armed. The police informed the team that they had discovered the bomb in a scrapyard and the scrap dealer was attempting to dismantle it with a hammer.

The aircraft bomb, an OFAB 100/120 Russian-made device, had been dropped in the Rokoko forest by the Burundian Army during fighting with Forces Nationales de Liberation (FNL) rebels back in May. An OFAB 100/120 contains 50kg of explosives combined with fragmentation.

The Mobile Team picked up the bomb from the police station and carefully took it, surrounded by sandbags, to the central demolition site in Mudubugu.

The MAG Technical Field Manager (TFM) set up and prepared to destroy the bomb.

The demolition, and...

...the huge crater left after the explosion.
