Why does MAG work in Vietnam?

As a result of the conflict in Vietnam, which ended in 1975, reports indicate that nearly all provinces in the country are contaminated to some degree by landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Although there has been no detailed national survey, the pilot phase of a Landmine Impact Survey is being conducted.

A number of the affected areas receive no external mine action assistance and, in addition, areas of the country that were previously only sparsely populated are now being developed.

This includes the new Ho Chi Minh Highway in western Vietnam and some border areas. Families moving there are at greater risk since these areas have not previously been considered a priority for mine clearance.
