Mine Action Teams

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) Mine Action Team, Sudan

MAG uses flexible multi-skilled Mine Action Teams for conflict clearance and weapons removal.

Our Mine Action Teams (MATs) are usually made up of 15 local people, each person trained to have at least two out of the following skills: demining, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, technical survey, medical and first aid, training and management.

MAG focuses on the impact our work has on lives. We release reclaimed safe land back to the local population as quickly as possible, enabling recovery and assisting the development of affected populations.

The beauty of the multi-skilled MAT is that it can be split into smaller targeted teams as required. It also reduces costs, duplication of effort, and response times.

Traditional landmine clearance was often carried out by military-style 'platoons'. It was clear that in small communities, around river banks and near homes especially, that this method was less effective than compact and more efficient MATs.

Large platoons would invariably be tied up clearing larger areas over longer periods, and in fact benefiting fewer people.

We focus on the impact our work has on lives. We release reclaimed safe land back to the local population as quickly as possible, enabling recovery and assisting the development of affected populations.
