MAG has been contracted by the United Nations since October 2004 to provide quality management on clearance of minefields between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot controlled parts of the island carried out by commercial contractors.
The total area of landmine contamination in Cyprus is estimated at nine million square metres consisting of 77 minefields or suspected minefields.
Based in Nicosia, this project ensures that the clearance work undertaken by other UN contractors is done according to international standards in a safe and efficient manner, and includes the management and maintenance of a mine detection dog accreditation area and testing database.
Quality control and management is an integral part of all MAG’s operations and is laid out in each programme’s Standard Operating Procedures and training, with the emphasis on quality and safety being built in to the implementation process, and direct monitoring of operations starting from the individual level.
The implementation of this project in Cyprus is mutually beneficial, as the team has been able to implement methods and quality assurance principles from internal standards developed by the organisation in its range of programmes around the world.
