When is the ‘Spirit of Diana’ Sponsored Walk?
The ‘Spirit of Diana’ Walk is at 11.30am on Saturday 28th April 2007.
How far is the ‘Spirit of Diana’ Sponsored Walk?
The walk is 10km long, starting at the Imperial War Musuem, and will follow a route past some of London's most famous sights before finishing at MAG's Mountain of Single Shoes - each one representing a life or limb lost to landmines so far in 2007.
Who can take part in the walk?
The walk is open to anyone of any ability. As long as you’re up for the challenge and willing to raise your target sponsorship, then this is for you. Those under the age of 16 must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult and those over the age of 65 will need a signature from the doctor confirming their fitness to take part.
When should I join up?
As soon as possible! Although there is no cut off date, for health and safety reasons entries will close once the event limit is reached.
Who is organising the walk?
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) - one of the charities supported by Diana - is the charity organising the event and will be in charge of everything before, during and after the ‘Spirit of Diana Walk’.
What does MAG do?
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is a UK-based landmine charity that saves lives by locating and removing landmines and unexploded bombs from countries affected by conflict. MAG was founded in 1989, was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997 and is one of the largest landmine charities in the world with 2000 staff. Registered charity number 1083008.
Why the ‘Spirit of Diana’ Walk?
2007 marks a decade since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, who became the international face of the anti-landmine campaign. Sadly, with Diana’s death, the much attention she brought to the cause died with her. Now is your chance to continue the vital work that she started. In addition, 2007 is the tenth anniversary of the launch of the Ottawa Treaty, which was created to stop the manufacture, trade, stockpile and use of anti-personnel mines. However, ten years on from the launch of the Treaty, there is a general misconception that the landmine problem has been dealt with.
What do I need to wear?
Wear something comfortable and warm and make sure you have suitable footwear. If you fancy drawing more attention to the landmine issue, why not get a friend to join you and do it three-legged? Or why not wear odd shoes to draw attention to the part of the body most vulnerable to landmines? Come up with whatever crazy ideas you can to make the Spirit of Diana Walk as memorable as possible!
What do I need to bring with me?
Just yourself and your sponsorship. We are asking everyone to try to raise a minimum of £75 for MAG as sponsorship. Cheques should be payable to ‘MAG’, making sure the cheque guarantee number is on the reverse. MAG will accept post dated cheques for up to a month. Credit or debit cards can be accepted on the day (no AMEX, sorry).
Are refreshments provided?
Water will be provided along the route, but we do recommend you also bring your own refreshments on the day.
How long will it take?
It is impossible to say how long it will take you to complete the walk but most people should be able to get to the Shoe Mountain within 3 hours. It is not a race and you can take as long as you want! Go at your own pace!
I have a disability, can I take part?
MAG welcomes people with any form of disability to take part. We will address your needs individually and will work to accommodate you where possible.
How do I get to the start?
The walk will start at the Imperial War Museum in South London. A map and information on how to get to there will be provided when you register. The Imperial War Museum has kindly agreed to allow the MAG fundraisers to use their facilities before the walk begins.
Can I bring family and friends to watch?
Yes. Bring with you as many people as you wish. Spectators will be able to watch you set off from the Imperial War Museum and can meet you at the end in Hyde Park.
Can I take photographs?
Yes and MAG will be taking our own photographs on the day.
Is the registration fee refundable if I change my mind or can’t make it?
No. The £10 registration fee covers the cost of allocating a place in the event to you and your exclusive ‘Spirit of Diana Walk’ T-shirt. If you have to pull out, for any reason, MAG regrets that we cannot refund the registration fee.
What is the fundraising target?
We are asking each walker to raise at least £75. There is not an upper limit and participants are encouraged to raise as much money as they can. MAG can provide you with materials and advice on how to raise as much as possible, so just get in touch! Everyone who raises over £100 will get a fantastic MAG goody-bag as well as your exclusive event t-shirt. The more you raise, the more people will benefit and lives saved as a result of MAG’s mine clearance work. If you don't raise £75, don't worry! Just get as much as you can.
How much of my sponsorship money goes to MAG?
All of it,100 per cent. The costs of the event are covered by the registration fee, so all the money you collect in sponsorship will support MAG’s mine clearance operations.
Can MAG provide me with fundraising materials?
Yes. MAG will provide sponsor forms and an online sponsorship facility. MAG can also supply leaflets, posters, collection tins on request. Just ask us for details.
What is ‘Match Giving’?
Some companies operate a Match Giving scheme where they match an amount raised by an employee for charity. This could half your sponsorship target, or double the amount you raise, so ask your employer for details.
Why does MAG ask for sponsorship to be paid on the day?
Because occasionally a small number of event participants fail to send in sponsorship money if the deadline is after the event, leaving the charity out of pocket, we ask for the money on the day to prevent this from happening. We hope you understand!
What other ways can MAG accept sponsorship money?
On the day we can accept cheques (payable to ‘MAG’) or credit and debit cards (no AMEX, sorry). The cheques can be post-dated for up to 4 weeks after the event. If possible, please do not bring cash.
Can I send in extra sponsorship money after the event?
Yes! If you still have pledges to collect after the walk, you can continue to collect them and just send them to MAG.
If I need to pull out can I give/sell my place to a friend?
Yes. Please advise MAG as soon as possible that you would like to transfer your place to someone else. The person taking your place will need to complete their own Registration Form and the registration fee you have paid will be transferred into their name.
What if it is raining/the weather is poor?
We cannot guarantee good weather. Only in the event of very severe weather conditions will this event be cancelled. We recommend that you look at the weather forecast in the days prior to the event and wear suitable clothing. A suggested kit-list will be included in your event pack.
Can I sign up on the day?
No, MAG can only accept registrations in advance.
Is there a closing date for registration?
Yes, Friday 27th April or until the event is full, whichever occurs first.
