In July 2007, Phil Deeker , a pyrotecnician from Salisbury, Wilts will be taking on 3 challenging routes across the Alps, Pyrenees and Cevennes established by the 'Club Des Cent Cols'. The ride will cover 4,100 kms and involves climbing a total of 71,000 metres – more than 3 times the ascent covered in the Tour de France the same month!
The successful ascent of each Col will be photographed, and a recorded profile of each days’ ride will be downloaded to laptop. Progress will appear regularly on this web-page during the ride.
Phil came to MAG with the idea for the ride as a way combining :
a) a celebration of his 50 years of youth (!) on 1st August with
b) doing something to help those dealing with greater hardships in life. “I was looking to help a relatively small but efficient and effective organisation that deals directly with re-establishing local community life after disaster. Working with explosives myself, I can relate directly to and have great respect for the work that MAG do across the world.”
This challenge ride requires the highest level of fitness but Phil wants to encourage any riders who would like to join him o
ver a few Cols, or even more than a few (!) : there is a fixed itinerary , so why not join him for a day or two? Claire, Phil’s wife, will be driving the essential back-up vehicle, so they could help with basic mechanical problems but would not be able to supply food and drink to other riders.
Phil now has a Romanian co-rider for the whole ride who is cycling to the start at Annecy from Romania (!) Training is going well : both riders are managing to ride roughly 700kms per week. Three riders have already enlisted to ride one day each with them. Any other 'visiting' riders will be very welcome!
Sponsorship is beginning to come in : £10 can 'buy' you one sub-1,000m Col, £15 will put your name against one of the higher ones. We will take a photo at the top of each Col with the sponsors' name in prominence! At 25.04.07, 58 Cols have been 'bought' so there are plenty more up for grabs! For a full list of the Cols to be ridden as well as full itinerary details, please e-mail Phil at philip@painsfireworks.com
Phil would particularly like to thank Rapha, Torq and Stonehenge Cycles for their support during the Training Phase of this project as well as their pledged support for the event itself.
