Frequently Asked Legacy Questions

Can I write my Will myself?

Homemade Wills can be disastrous. You may omit particularly important details, such as what you wish to happen if the main beneficiary does not survive. It's always worth talking to a solicitor or qualified legal professional to make sure everything you need is covered in your Will.

What type of legacy would benefit MAG?

Any gift to MAG will make a difference. More than 90 percent of our income is spent directly on field operations, so you can be sure your gift really will benefit those who need it.

A Residuary Legacy may mean that as inflation rises, the value of your estate increases. This means the size of your legacy may increase, and Inheritance Tax paid on your estate is kept to a minimum.

Can I leave a legacy to a specific MAG project or country where MAG operates?

If you have a preference on where your legacy should be spent, we will be happy to discuss the options with you, although projects that need support change over time. Your gift is much more flexible and effective if it can be used for MAG's general purposes. That way we can use it where the need is greatest.

Can I save tax by leaving a legacy to MAG in my Will?

Yes. If your estate is worth more than the ‘nil-rate' band (which varies each tax year) you may have to pay Inheritance Tax your estate. Inheritance Tax is the tax paid on your estate when you die. There are various ways to avoid or limit Inheritance Tax, one of which is to make a donation to a charity in your Will which is completely free of tax.

Inheritance Tax is a complex subject, and if you have a potentially large estate you should seek professional advice.

Is making a Will in Scotland different?

Yes, when making or reviewing an existing Will in Scotland please speak to your solicitor for advice.

If I choose to leave a legacy to MAG in my Will what should I do next?

If you decide to leave a legacy to MAG in your Will, please send us your completed pledge card to inform us of your intentions. Understanding how many people are intending to leave us a legacy helps us plan for the future. Thank you.
