| Destruction of SAM 7s |
The aim of MAG's Small Arms Light Weapons Project is to remove and destroy unsecured and abandoned weapons caches from along the border of southern Sudan - initial reports highlighted over 100 unsecured stockpiles.
The project is focused on reducing the threat posed by unsecured caches in potentially volatile border areas. Should the weapons fall into the wrong hands they pose a significant threat to the security in the area and the peace building process in south Sudan. MAG's team consists of a Team Leader and four technicians trained in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), who are supported by two medics and two drivers. The team has worked for the past few months in the border areas of Yei, Juba, Morobo and Kajo Keji, clearing and destroying a broad range of munitions and small arms.
With still more work to do, to date, more than 1000 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) have been moved and safely destroyed, ranging from 60mm mortars to SAM 7 surface-to-air missiles. These are capable of taking any aircraft out of the sky, so were destroyed as a matter of priority. Often items discovered were found in a usable condition.
The impact of MAG's work in this particularly tempestuous region has has made significant and lasting contributions to the peace and stability of the area.
