SUDAN: Advanced training helps MAG leave lasting legacy

One of MAG’s key objectives in its interventions in all developing countries, especially Sudan, is to enhance national capacity. This is to ensure that activities are sustainable and leave a lasting legacy, promoting autonomy and independence, as well as securing safety for communities in the future.

In Sudan, this objective supports National Strategic Framework and Multi-Year Plan targets for the transferral of ownership of demining activities to national bodies.

Consequently, the training of staff is an integral part of MAG’s operations, and care is taken to ensure that courses are tailored for the capacities of learners and the specific requirements of each particular country context. MAG aims to build the confidence of its staff, whilst at the same time challenging them to reach new levels of excellence.

In September, MAG launched its first Junior Team Leader Training Course in North Sudan. MAG’s well-established presence in Sudan, and its long-term commitment to national staff has enabled it to build a strong relationship with demining teams.

Using this deep knowledge of staff skills and capacities, MAG selected a number of deminers who have shown outstanding aptitude and engagement in demining activities to participate in the Junior Team Leader Training Course. This course is designed to refine and develop deminers’ skills and create a cadre of Team Leaders able to assist Technical Field Managers in the day to day running of demining operations.

The training course included modules in command and control, site set-up, MAG Standard Operating Procedures and use of GPS mapping devices.

The course included modules in command and control, site set-up, MAG Standard Operating Procedures and use of GPS mapping devices. MAG was pleased to see all 10 deminers graduate from the course.

It is intended that the Team Leader position acts as a bridge to a TFM role, providing an opportunity for national staff to take greater responsibility and provide greater input to operations.  MAG will continue to support the career progress of deminers through training and oversight. MAG intends to facilitate the development of skilled demining professionals in Sudan, capable of performing to recognised international standards.

A survivor's story

"We are not in a position to know where or what these dangerous items are. We often bring our children with us when we work in the fields and they can easily find these unexploded devices. They must be removed."
