SRI LANKA: Landmine and UXO Clearance

UXOMAG's landmine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance activities have supported the resettlement programme in the Vanni region, an area where a significant number of people were displaced as a result of the tsunami.

MAG have worked alongside Humanitarian Demining Unit (HDU) staff undertaking small scale, targeted demining tasks in support of school and hospital rehabilitation and increase accessibility to water, villages and other community resources.

The work that MAG is carrying out has a knock-on effect allowing other agencies and NGOs to carry out there own development and support projects. These agencies include World Vision, CARE and UNICEF.

In the past few months MAG has undertaken small-scale emergency demining and UXO removal and destruction tasks in 14 villages. As a result, 25,663 sq/m of land has been declared safe and 49 dangerous items have been removed and destroyed.
