MAG is proud of the abilities of its national staff. Since MAG started work in Southeast Asia – in Cambodia in 1992 – the staff have become able to run the programmes with only very limited expatriate support.
MAG Cambodia is a case in point. The 500 staff include just four expatriates, meaning that all clearance operations are carried out by national staff, whilst the expatriate operations staff mainly undertake quality assurance work.
Even in this context, a recent nationals-only meeting was still a first. Thirteen senior managers from the three Southeast Asian countries where MAG works – Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos – attended a three-day regional workshop in Phnom Penh.
The three-day workshop gave the participants the opportunity to share and exchange work experience, to raise questions, suggestions, points for clarification and to provide clear information.
The managers included those from human resources, administration, project administration, provincial and regional programmes, mine action quality assurance and finance.
Soth Phommalinh, a Provincial Programme Manager from MAG Lao PDR, stressed the importance of the first-ever regional workshop:
“Something related to networking is always good. We can exchange [ideas or experiences]. This is a good example to start with the regional workshop."
“We can learn best practices from each country to apply to our country,” said Nguyen Xuan Tien, MAG Vietnam’s Human Resources and Administration Manager.
David Hayter, Country Programme Manager for MAG Lao PDR, said that the meeting "was a reflection of the excellent progress of our national managers. Also, we want them to see that they are part of the whole organisation, not just part of a country programme."
MAG has been operational in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos since 1992, 1999 and 1994 respectively.
