IRAQ: Posting mine awareness in Chamchamal

MAG's mine awareness activities in Chamchamal district have been bolstered following a charitable donation of US$750 from Talisman Energy.

An MRE billboard located near a security checkpoint in Chamchamal.

MAG’s mine awareness programme reduces the risk of mines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) to at-risk communities. These activities include direct Mine Risk Education (MRE), the integration of an MRE curriculum into primary schools in partnership with the Ministry of Education, and supporting religious leaders to deliver the message in places of worship.

In addition, MAG uses a variety of local media including radio and television, leaflet distribution and the use of billboards to deliver the MRE messages.

Funding awarded by Talisman resulted in:

• Seventy-five new mine awareness posters printed for distribution

• Nineteen posters applied to billboards located at security checkpoints, main travel routes, recreational areas and major urban centres

• Fifty-six posters distributed in schools, hospitals, medical centres, government offices and police stations
