IRAQ: Peshmerga training project launched

MAG representatives have travelled to the Peshmerga Kurdish military base to formally launch a training project to support the development of a sustainable humanitarian conventional weapons destruction capacity within the forces under the control of the Kurdish Regional Government.

Funded by the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, US Department of State, the project will also provide these forces with all the equipment required to deploy safely. Training for two Peshmerga Engineering unit teams started at the beginning of February and will continue until April.

After the training, the teams will respond to contamination from Remnants of Conflict in Erbil governorate. MAG will continue to provide technical assistance and support to the teams as they deploy to clearance tasks in the area.

MAG Iraq deminer

Internal conflicts, the 1980-88 war with Iran, the 1991 Gulf War and the conflict that began in 2003 have left Iraq as one of the countries worst-affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance.
