DRC: MAG Goes From Strength to Strength

Teams in DR Congo reach an all time high

MAG DRC broke new ground during the month of August 2006 by not only improving on the exceptional achievements of July, but was able to surpass it by almost doubling it's outputs, thereby setting all time high figures for operations since MAG first started work in the country in June 2004. The upshot of this is that more lives have been saved thanks to the hard work and dedication of our national and international staff.

MRE in Equateur Province
 MRE in Equateur Province

MAG is exceptionally proud of the achievements in Equateur and Katanga provices duringthisperiod, which included the clearance of 254 danger areas, along with the destruction of six weapon stockpiles. As a result, eleven anti-personnel mines were destroyed, 2090 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and 11,150 rounds of small arms ammunition. This resulted in almost 18,000 metres squared of cleared land, which can now be used for agriculture, rebuilding homes and building social amenities such as health care centres and schools. The clearance and destruction was carried out thanks to funding from the British Department for International Development (DFID). the Belgian Government and the Swedish Development Agency (SIDA).

In addition MAG community liaison staff conducted 56 mine risk education (MRE) seminars in both provinces, reaching no less than 8723 community members. An additional 56 communities have been surveyed and a further 151 new danger areas have been found, which will be cleared in the coming months.
