A total of 3,400 weapons were destroyed by small arms and light weapons (SALW) teams in the Democratic Republic of Congo during February, as MAG’s weapons destruction project – funded by the Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement, US Department of State – continued at the Central Logistics Base in Kinshasa.

Additionally, operations in Gemena, Libenge, Zongo and Dongo – located in Nord Ubangi, 3rd Military Region, Equateur Province – led to the destruction of 4,047 items of ammunition. This team has been repatriated to Kinshasa for an upcoming deployment to the 1st Military Region (Bandundu).

Meanwhile, the Katanga SALW team has deployed to Goma for an emergency destruction operation involving about 100 tons of ammunition (over 90,000 kilogrammes) which were badly stored and presented a serious risk of explosion.

Aiming to prevent another incident such as Camp Ngashi, the operation follows a request from the Congolese authorities and MAG assessment mission.
