Mine Risk Education Saves Lives
Story by Lydia Good, Programme Officer
Mine Risk Education (MRE) recently prevented death and bloodshed in the Angolan township of Bairro Luanga. Local townsperson Justino Kahombo knew exactly what to do after discovering a landmine close to his son's house, thanks to the MRE programme he'd attended upon his return to Angola following almost twenty years spent as a refugee in neighbouring DR Congo.
MRE is an initiative pioneered by MAG to help local communities recognise what landmines and other unexploded devices look like, giving them guidelines about what safe actions to take if such an explosive is discovered. By making contact with people early and at a local level, MAG's technical staff and Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams are able to devise a strategy of clearance that most benefits the community involved.
